Is ChatGPT sending me traffic? How to check in 5 minutes

Clerion Research Team30 October 20267 min read

Look for visits with the source chatgpt.com, either as a referrer or as the utm_source=chatgpt.com tag ChatGPT adds to its links. If neither appears over 90 days, ChatGPT sends you little you can measure, and some of its clicks may be hiding in Direct.

If ChatGPT is sending you traffic, you can see it in your analytics today: look for visits with the source chatgpt.com, either as a referrer or as the tag utm_source=chatgpt.com that ChatGPT adds to its links. If neither shows up after a few weeks, ChatGPT is sending you little or nothing you can measure, and some of what it does send may be hiding in Direct.

How does a ChatGPT visit show up in analytics?

A person clicks a link in a ChatGPT answer and lands on your site. To your analytics tool, that is a normal human visit. What tells you it came from ChatGPT is one of two signals:

  • A UTM tag. OpenAI's publisher FAQ says ChatGPT automatically adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral URLs. It does not add a utm_medium.
  • A referrer. The browser may pass chatgpt.com (or the older chat.openai.com) in the referrer header.

Either one is enough to count the visit. When both are missing, the visit looks like someone typed your URL, and it lands in Direct.

This is not the same as ChatGPT's crawlers (GPTBot or OAI-SearchBot) reading your pages. Crawler hits are bots. They show up in server logs, not as visitors in a script-based analytics tool, and they tell you nothing about whether people are clicking through.

Where should I look in my analytics tool?

The place depends on the tool, but the value you are looking for is the same.

Tool Where to look What to search for
GA4 Reports, Acquisition, Traffic acquisition, with Session source / medium as the dimension chatgpt
GA4 (channel view) Same report, Session default channel group AI Assistant, Referral and Unassigned rows
Plausible, Fathom, Umami and similar Sources or Referrers panel chatgpt.com
Your own server logs Referer field and query strings chatgpt.com and utm_source=chatgpt.com

In GA4, Google's help page describes an AI Assistant default channel that covers sources like ChatGPT, Gemini, DeepSeek, Copilot and Grok. Its rule sets the medium to ai-assistant when the referrer matches Google's list. A ChatGPT visit that only carries the UTM tag and no medium can still miss that rule. SearchPilot's reference table notes that tagged ChatGPT visits can show as Unassigned in GA4. So check the source, not only the channel.

How do I check it myself in 5 minutes?

  1. Pick a long date range. Use the last 90 days. AI referral volume on a small site is low, so a week can show zero even when ChatGPT does send people.
  2. Filter by source. In your traffic report, search the source or referrer for chatgpt. Note the number of visits and which pages they landed on.
  3. Check the other tags. Search for utm_source=chatgpt.com in your landing page URLs if your tool keeps query strings. Those are ChatGPT clicks even when the referrer was lost.
  4. Look at the AI Assistant, Referral and Unassigned rows if you use GA4, and expand each by source.
  5. Click through one link yourself. Ask ChatGPT a question your site answers, click a citation to your site if it gives one, and watch your real-time report. If the visit appears as chatgpt.com, your setup is counting ChatGPT clicks.

If steps 2 to 4 return nothing and step 5 works, ChatGPT is not citing you much yet. If step 5 does not show up at all, your tracking is the problem, not ChatGPT.

Why would ChatGPT traffic show up as Direct?

Because some clicks arrive with no referrer and no tag. Public tests point to a few causes:

  • Apps. SearchPilot's table reports that ChatGPT's iOS and Android apps pass no referrer, because the hand-off to the phone's browser strips it.
  • noreferrer links. Ahrefs found an in-content link in a paid ChatGPT account carried a noreferrer attribute, so the browser sent nothing.
  • Bugs. Search Engine Land reported in October 2026 that ChatGPT links lost the utm_source=chatgpt.com tag for several days. OpenAI confirmed it was a bug, and the fix began rolling out on October 15. If your ChatGPT numbers dipped and Direct rose around then, annotate it rather than changing anything.

You will not recover every one of these visits. One honest hint: people rarely type a long article URL by hand, so a rise in Direct visits to a deep page, at the same time as ChatGPT referrals to it grow, is worth noticing. Treat it as a hint, not proof.

Do Perplexity, Claude and Gemini show up the same way?

They show up by referrer, and none of them is reported to add a UTM tag like ChatGPT does. The domains to search for are perplexity.ai, claude.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com. Ahrefs' tests found Claude passed a referrer on every link it tried and Perplexity's website did too, while Perplexity's desktop app did not. SearchPilot found the Gemini mobile app usually arrives as Direct. These are point-in-time tests, so check your own data rather than treating them as fixed rules.

What do I do once I know ChatGPT sends traffic?

Counting visits is the first half. The useful question is what those visitors do next: do they sign up, and do they pay? That means keeping the source attached until a payment happens. We walked through that in how to track revenue from ChatGPT traffic.

Also look at which pages ChatGPT sends people to. Those pages are the ones it cites. Make sure each has a clear next step, because an AI visitor who lands on a blog post with no path to your product leaves.

What is Clerion?

Clerion is website intelligence for AI founders. You add it with one script tag. It sets no cookies, needs no consent banner and keeps data on EU servers. It counts ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini and Copilot traffic as its own channel, ties revenue to source, scores pages on AI readability, works as a Claude connector, and sends a daily read of what changed, why, and the one fix to make first.

If you would rather not filter reports by hand every week, add the Clerion script tag and the AI-assistant channel is there from your first visitor.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if ChatGPT is sending me traffic?

Filter your traffic report by source and search for chatgpt.com. ChatGPT visits arrive with chatgpt.com as the referrer, or with utm_source=chatgpt.com in the landing URL, which OpenAI says ChatGPT adds to referral links.

Where does ChatGPT traffic appear in GA4?

Usually under the AI Assistant channel, Referral, or Unassigned. GA4 sets the medium to ai-assistant when the referrer matches its list, but a visit with only the UTM tag and no medium can land in Unassigned. Check Session source / medium for chatgpt.

Why does ChatGPT traffic show up as Direct?

Some clicks arrive with no referrer and no tag. Public tests report that ChatGPT's mobile apps strip the referrer and some links carry a noreferrer attribute. A bug in October 2026 also removed the UTM tag for several days before OpenAI fixed it.

Is GPTBot the same as ChatGPT traffic?

No. GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot are crawlers that read your pages. They show up in server logs, not as human visitors. ChatGPT traffic means people clicking links in ChatGPT answers and landing on your site.

How long a date range should I check?

Use at least the last 90 days. AI referral volume on a small site is low, so a single week can show zero visits even when ChatGPT does send people now and then.

Clerion (“Clerion”), at getclerion.com and clerion.si, is website intelligence for AI founders: web analytics, AI-assistant traffic, conversions and revenue by source, SEO and AI-readiness, speed and errors from one script tag. It finds the patterns in the data, ranks what changed and tells you the fix. Designed with taste: one typeface, one accent, and nothing that moves unless it tells you something. AI is now also called SI, super intelligence; the channel is the same. It sets no cookies, stores no personal data, needs no consent banner, and holds data in the EU. Every briefing is written from your own numbers, and every figure in it comes from your data rather than from the model. Clerion is a software product and does not provide marketing, legal or advisory services. We have no ad budget: if Clerion helps you, telling a friend does more for us than any campaign could.
