Is a .si domain bad for SEO compared to .com or .ai? (2026)

Clerion Research Team10 October 202612 min read

Is a .si domain bad for SEO? Yes, as your main site if your customers are outside Slovenia: as of October 2026, Google treats .si as a Slovenian country code, unlike .com or .ai. As a 301 redirect to your main domain, it costs you nothing.

A .si domain is bad for SEO if it is your main site and your customers are outside Slovenia. As of October 2026, Google treats .si as a Slovenian country code, not a generic domain like .com or .ai. Used as a redirect to your main domain, it is harmless and costs you nothing in rankings.

For most founders, that's it. What follows is the detail behind it: what Google's own docs say, what changed in 2022, whether AI assistants care about the ending at all, and what to do if you already launched on .si.

This matters more now than it did a month ago. Netcraft counted 198,535 .si domains on 23 September 2026. When we checked Register.si on 10 October 2026, the registry's homepage showed 364,370. That is up about 84% in under three weeks, driven by the US government's switch to calling AI "super intelligence" (SI). Some of those names will end up hosting real products, and a lot of the people behind them will only find out about the SEO cost once they've launched.

Is a .si domain bad for SEO?

Yes, as a primary domain for a global product. Google reads a country-code domain as "a strong signal" that a site is meant for that country, and .si is not on the short list of country codes Google treats as generic. A .si site can still rank abroad, but it starts every query outside Slovenia with a signal pointing at the wrong market.

The quote comes straight from Google's guide to managing multi-regional and multilingual sites, last updated in December 2025. It says country-code top-level domains (ccTLDs) "provide a strong signal to both users and search engines that your site is explicitly intended for a certain country."

"Bad" here means a handicap, not a ban. Google won't hide a .si site from someone searching in Berlin or Austin. It just leans toward showing it to people in Slovenia. For a product whose buyers sit in the US, UK or EU at large, that lean works against you on every search where you compete with a .com or .ai rival that has no country attached.

There's one more cost, and it has nothing to do with Google. OVHcloud's 7 October write-up notes that more than 44,000 names already exist in both .si and .ai, and "s" sits next to "a" on a QWERTY keyboard. If your brand lives on .si while a lookalike .ai belongs to someone else, branded searches and links get split between the two.

How does Google treat .si compared with .com and .ai?

Google treats .com and .ai the same way: as generic domains with no country attached. It treats .si as Slovenian. The difference is a list. Google keeps a set of country codes it handles as generic because most sites using them serve the whole world, and .ai and .io are on it. .si is not.

Here is how the three compare for an AI startup selling worldwide, as of October 2026:

.com .ai .si
How Google classifies it Generic Generic (country code on Google's generic list) Slovenian country code
Country signal in Google None None Strong signal for Slovenia
Can you switch the country signal off? Nothing to switch off Nothing to switch off No, the Search Console setting was removed in 2022
Fine as a 301 redirect to your main site? Yes Yes Yes
Fine as your main, indexed domain for global buyers? Yes Yes No
Registered names Not covered here 1,277,727 (June 2026, per Wikipedia) 364,370 (Register.si, checked 10 October 2026)

Two things worth knowing about that table. First, Google's documentation names .ai and .io as generic but gives no date for when each was added. Wikipedia dates Google's announcement for .ai to 2021, after the domain had become shorthand for AI companies rather than for Anguilla. Second, the letters themselves earn you nothing. Google's John Mueller said in an office-hours hangout that a keyword in the domain ending is not a ranking factor ("The TLD is not something we take into account," as Target Internet reported it). .si won't help you rank for "super intelligence" any more than .ai helps you rank for "AI".

Can I tell Google my .si site is for a global audience?

No. Google removed the only direct control. Search Console's International Targeting report, which let you set a target country, was announced as deprecated on 24 August 2022 and removed on 22 September 2022, according to Search Engine Land.

Google's help page on the deprecation says country targeting "is no longer supported" and points site owners to hreflang. This is where a lot of the advice out there goes wrong. Some guides published in late September 2026 still tell .si owners to "override" the country signal in Search Console. That setting has been gone for four years now.

Hreflang will not fix it either. Hreflang tells Google which language or regional version of a page to show to which audience, when you have several versions. Google's multi-regional guide lists it as one signal among several: hreflang, server location, local addresses and phone numbers, local currency, local links. Nowhere does it say hreflang cancels the country signal of a ccTLD. Adding hreflang="en" to a .si site describes the page. It doesn't change what the domain tells Google.

Does a .si domain hurt my chances of being cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity or AI Overviews?

For Google's AI features, yes, indirectly. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet to appear as a link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, with no special optimisation beyond that. Whatever holds a .si page back in regular Google results carries into those answers. ChatGPT and Perplexity publish no rule about domain endings.

The Google side comes from its page on AI features and your website, which says "there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary." Read the other way round, that means AI Overviews inherit the same index and the same signals. So a ccTLD that points Google at Slovenia is a ccTLD that points Google's AI answers at Slovenia.

The other assistants are murkier. OpenAI's crawler documentation says OAI-SearchBot is "used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT's search features," and Perplexity's bot documentation says PerplexityBot exists "to surface and link websites in search results on Perplexity." Both pages talk about robots.txt access and IP ranges. Neither mentions domain extensions. We have found no evidence either way on whether their ranking systems weigh ccTLDs, and nobody outside those companies can test it cleanly yet.

So focus on what you can actually control, which is access. If OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot cannot fetch your pages, your domain ending is irrelevant because you are not in the running at all. Fix that first. Then worry about the ending.

Does redirecting a .si domain to my .com hurt SEO?

No. A permanent redirect from .si to your main domain is the safe way to own one. Google recommends HTTP permanent redirects, 301 or 308, and says to keep them "generally at least 1 year" so its signals move to the destination. The .si name stops being an indexed Slovenian site and becomes a door to your generic one.

That guidance is from Google's site move documentation, updated in August 2026. If you bought .si to protect your name or because it looked good, setting up the redirect is quick:

  1. Point the .si domain at a host or proxy that can issue redirects (Cloudflare, Vercel, Netlify, your own nginx).
  2. Send every path with a 301 or 308 to the same path on your main domain, so yourname.si/pricing lands on yourname.com/pricing.
  3. Serve the redirect over HTTPS as well as HTTP, so people who type https:// do not hit a certificate error.
  4. Test one deep link with curl -I and confirm you see a 301 or 308 and the right location header.
  5. Leave it alone. Don't let it quietly break when someone tidies up DNS a year from now.

Our guide to buying a .si domain has the exact steps for each host.

What if I already launched my product on .si?

Move the indexed site to a generic domain and redirect .si to it. Treat it as a standard site move: map every old URL to its new one, use 301 or 308 redirects, keep them for at least a year, and expect rankings to wobble while Google recrawls. Google calls that wobble normal and says rankings "will settle down over time."

Say you run a voice-agent startup (a hypothetical) and launched at callwise.si in the September rush because callwise.ai was taken. Three weeks in, you have about 40 indexed pages and a handful of backlinks from launch posts. Here is how we would think it through:

  • Check whether a generic name is gettable. Say callwise.com is taken but getcallwise.com or callwise.io is free. Either is generic in Google's eyes.
  • Move now, not in a year. Forty pages and a few weeks of links are cheap to move. Four hundred pages and a year of press are not. The cost of a move grows with every link pointing at the old domain.
  • Redirect path for path. Every one of the 40 URLs gets a 308 to its twin on the new domain. Ask the launch-post authors to update their links if they will.
  • Keep the .si. It stays registered and redirecting, so anyone who types it or clicks an old link still reaches you.

If your buyers really are in Slovenia, or in the Slovene-speaking market, none of this applies. A .si domain is the right signal for that audience and you should keep it as your main site.

Will Google ever treat .si as generic?

Possibly, but nothing has been announced, and you should not plan around it. Google has added country codes to its generic list before, .ai being the best-known case, once most sites using them clearly served the world. As of October 2026, .si is not on the list, and Google has said nothing about it.

Our read is that .si is a harder case than .ai was. .ai spent years drifting toward AI companies before Google moved. .si is a working national domain with a Slovenian registry, Slovenian businesses and Slovenian government sites, and its spike is a few weeks old. Netcraft also found that just over half of the .si names it tracked at one registrar were already listed for resale, which suggests many of the new names will never host a product at all.

The list itself also changes quietly. In 2018, Google removed the list of generic ccTLDs from its Search Console help pages, and John Mueller said at the time it meant no change in how Google handled them. Today the list sits in the multi-regional guide. If .si ever joins it, that page is where you will see it. Check it before you pick a domain, not after.

Do this tonight

  1. Search site:yourname.si in Google. If it returns pages, your .si is an indexed Slovenian site, not a redirect.
  2. Run curl -I https://yourname.si/pricing and confirm a 301 or 308 to the same path on your main domain.
  3. Open Google's multi-regional guide and check that your main domain's ending is either a gTLD or on the generic list.
  4. Open your robots.txt and make sure OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Googlebot are not blocked.
  5. Ask ChatGPT and Perplexity "is a .si domain bad for SEO" and note which pages they cite. That is your baseline for this question.

Once the redirect is live, the useful number is how many people arrive through the .si name and how many arrive from AI assistants. Clerion reports ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini and Copilot as their own channel, and the free AI crawler checker shows what a model sees on any page.

Frequently asked questions

Does Google treat .si as a generic domain like .ai?

No. As of October 2026, .si is not on Google's list of country codes it treats as generic. .ai and .io are. Google reads .si as a strong signal that a site is meant for Slovenia.

Can I change the target country of a .si site in Search Console?

No. Google deprecated Search Console's International Targeting report in 2022 and says country targeting is no longer supported. Hreflang is still supported, but Google does not say it cancels a country-code signal.

Will a .si domain help me rank for super intelligence searches?

No. Google's John Mueller has said the TLD is not something Google takes into account as a keyword, so the letters in your domain ending give no ranking boost for 'SI' or 'super intelligence' queries.

Is it safe to redirect a .si domain to my .com or .ai?

Yes. Use a permanent 301 or 308 redirect, path for path, over HTTPS, and keep it in place. Google recommends keeping redirects for at least a year so its signals move to the destination domain.

Does a .si domain affect AI Overviews or ChatGPT citations?

For Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, a page must rank and be indexed in Google Search, so the .si country signal carries over. OpenAI and Perplexity publish no rule about domain endings; robots.txt access matters more there.

Should a Slovenian company use a .si domain?

Yes. If your customers are in Slovenia, .si sends exactly the right signal to Google and to local buyers. The SEO handicap only applies when you sell mainly to people outside Slovenia.

Could Google add .si to its generic domain list?

It could, but nothing has been announced as of October 2026. Google has moved country codes like .ai onto the generic list before, after most sites using them served a global audience. Do not plan around it.
