.si vs .ai domain: which should an AI startup buy? (2026)

Clerion Research Team13 October 202611 min read

In the .si vs .ai domain choice, put your product on .ai (or .com) and buy the matching .si as a cheap redirect. As of October 2026 a .si costs about $12 a year and a .ai about $165 for the two-year minimum, but Google treats .ai as global and .si as Slovenian.

Blue and near-black swirling blurred gradient banner reading .si vs .ai

Put your product on .ai (or .com) and buy the matching .si as a cheap redirect. As of October 2026, a .si costs about $12 a year against roughly $165 for a two-year .ai, but Google treats .ai as a global domain and .si as a Slovenian one. So .si is a great second address and a weak first one.

That's the short version of the .si vs .ai domain question. The longer version matters because more than 137,000 .si names were registered in the last ten days alone, many on the assumption that .si is "the new .ai". Some of that assumption holds up. Some of it gets a basic fact about how Google reads country domains wrong.

This post is for the founder who has both tabs open at the registrar right now. Every price and the current .si count were checked on 11 October 2026, with the source linked where each claim sits.

What's the real difference between a .si and a .ai domain?

Both are country codes sold openly through mainstream registrars such as Porkbun. .ai belongs to Anguilla and is run by Identity Digital. .si belongs to Slovenia and is run by Register.si. The gaps that matter are cost, the minimum term, and how Google treats each one for search.

The ownership story is older than the hype. Identity Digital has managed .ai for the Government of Anguilla since January 2025, and the extension had 1,277,727 names by June 2026. .si had a quieter life until September 2026, when a US push to call AI "super intelligence" sent founders and speculators to the registry. If you want the full background on that rename, the Clerion guide to what SI means covers it.

Here's the part most comparison pages skip. A .ai domain is a mature, expensive, globally treated asset with years of startup use behind it. A .si domain is a cheap, newly fashionable country code whose meaning for AI is about three weeks old. They aren't the same kind of bet, and pricing them side by side hides that.

How much does a .si domain cost compared to .ai?

A .si costs roughly $12 to $24 a year and can be bought for a single year. A .ai costs $82.70 a year at Porkbun, but you must pay for two years up front, so the entry ticket is around $165. Over two years, a .si at the cheapest registrar costs about one seventh of a .ai.

Prices as listed on each registrar's own page, 11 October 2026:

.si .ai
Minimum term 1 year (Register.si) 2 years (Porkbun)
Dynadot $11.54 to register, $11.54 to renew (Dynadot) n/a in this check
Porkbun $20.38 sale, $23.70 regular renewal (Porkbun) $82.70 a year, $165.40 for the 2-year minimum
Registry wholesale €10 per domain (CircleID) $80 a year since 5 March 2026 (Domain Name Wire)
Two years, cheapest listed $23.08 $165.40

Two details are worth slowing down for. First, the .ai price went up this year: the registry raised wholesale by 14%, from $70 to $80 a year, on 5 March 2026, and every renewal you pay from now on carries that. Second, compare renewals, not launch prices. Porkbun's .si sale price looks fine until you see the $23.70 regular renewal. Over five years, that's the number you live with.

Does Google treat .si and .ai the same for SEO?

No. Google's own documentation lists .ai among the country codes it treats as generic, like .io and .co. .si isn't on that list, so Google reads it as a strong signal the site is meant for Slovenia. For a product selling worldwide, that makes .si the weaker home for your main site.

The source is Google Search Central's page on multi-regional sites, last updated December 2025. It says country codes "provide a strong signal to both users and search engines that your site is explicitly intended for a certain country", then names the exceptions it treats as generic: .ad, .ai, .as, .bz, .cc, .cd, .co, .dj, .fm, .io, .la, .me, .ms, .nu, .sc, .sr, .su, .tv, .tk and .ws. Google adds that the list "may change". If .si ever shows up there, this whole section flips. Today it isn't.

So a .si site serving the US, India or Germany starts with a geographic handicap. Google can still rank it on content and links, but you're giving away a signal you didn't need to give away. We went through the details, including what a redirect does and doesn't pass, in Is a .si domain bad for SEO compared to .com or .ai?

One more practical point. AI assistants like ChatGPT and Perplexity lean on search indexes when they browse, so a domain that ranks worse in Google and Bing will tend to be read less by the assistants too. The domain your content lives on is the one that earns citations. The redirect earns nothing on its own.

Why is everyone suddenly registering .si domains?

Because "super intelligence", or SI, became the US government's word for AI in late September 2026, and .si happens to spell it. Registrations jumped within a day of the first public mention. As of 11 October 2026, Register.si counts 378,745 .si domains, up 57% from 241,459 on 1 October.

The timeline is short. Netcraft traced the first spike to 19 September and found new .si registrations overtook new .ai ones within 25 hours of the 22 September UN speech that floated the name. The executive order followed on 29 September, per TechCrunch. In the week of 23 to 29 September, data cited by CircleID shows 17,621 new .si names against 7,209 new .ai names.

The 1 October total of 241,459 is CircleID's reading of Register.si. And it hasn't slowed. The Register.si homepage today shows 9,883 new .si names in the last 24 hours and 46,066 in the previous month.

Who's buying? Mostly not founders building on it. Netcraft found that about 52% of the .si names registered at Dynadot between 19 and 22 September were listed for resale within days. It also counted more than 44,000 .si names that copy an existing .ai name, 22% of all .si domains at the time, yet only about 1,500 of those pairs point to the same server. Hostinger told TechCrunch that only around 3% of the .si names it sold were explicitly AI-related.

Is .si a safe long-term bet or a fad?

As a redirect, it's safe enough at $12 a year. As your main brand, it's a bet on a political label sticking. .ai took years to become normal for startups. .si's link to AI depends on a three-week-old naming choice that the government can drop, and its search signal still points at Slovenia.

Look at the people with the most data. Hostinger's head of domains told TechCrunch he doesn't expect .si to replace .ai any time soon and called it a "more affordable second option". That lines up with what the buying patterns show: the bulk of the new names are parked, resold or held defensively.

The registry side is less of a worry. Register.si sets clear rules: names of 2 to 63 characters, renewals of one to five years, and a 30-day quarantine before an expired name is deleted, per its own site. Our explainer on who controls the .si domain covers governance and dispute rules in more depth.

The money also flows differently. Anguilla's government earned about US$32 million from .ai in 2023, over 10% of the territory's GDP, and CircleID reports US$85.3 million in 2025. That income gives Anguilla every reason to keep .ai stable and open. The .si windfall, as Hostinger's domain lead put it, goes to the registry, not the state budget. Neither setup is a risk to you as a registrant. It just explains why .ai has a whole economy behind it and .si, for now, has a news cycle.

When should you pick .si over .ai?

Pick .si as your main domain only if your name is taken on .com and .ai, you can't afford the .ai two-year entry, or Slovenia is a real market. In every other case, build on .ai or .com and keep the .si as a redirect so nobody else can squat it.

Run your name through these four questions in order. Stop at the first "yes".

  1. Do you already own the .com or .ai? Keep it as your main site. Buy the .si for about $12 and point it there with a 301.
  2. Is the .ai free and is $165 fine for two years? Buy the .ai for the product and the .si as a guard. That's about $177 all in.
  3. Is the .ai taken or out of budget, but the .com free? Build on .com. Google treats it as global, and it's the domain people type when they guess.
  4. Are all of those gone? Then .si is a fair main domain, as long as you accept the Slovenian targeting and plan to earn rankings with content and links.

Say you're launching an AI note-taking tool called Quillmoth (a made-up name for this example). Quillmoth.com is parked, quillmoth.ai is free and quillmoth.si is free. You'd pay $165.40 for the .ai at Porkbun and $11.54 for the .si at Dynadot, put the product on .ai, and set the .si to redirect. For under $180 you own both, and your search signal stays global.

How do you set up the .si redirect so it actually helps?

Use a permanent 301 or 308 redirect from every .si URL to the same path on your main domain, over HTTPS. Then add the .si address anywhere you list your other profiles, so people and models can tie both names to one brand.

The Clerion guide to buying a .si domain walks through redirect setups for Cloudflare, Vercel, Netlify, nginx and plain registrar forwarding. Test it with curl -I https://yourname.si and check that you see a 301 or 308 and a Location header pointing at your main site.

One trap: people who type your .si arrive with no referrer, so in most analytics they blend into every other "direct" visit. Add a UTM tag to the redirect target if you want to see how many people actually type the .si. If you'd like that traffic, plus visits from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Gemini, shown as their own channels without a cookie banner, Clerion does it from one script tag.

Do this tonight

  1. Check your name on .com, .ai and .si at one registrar. Write down the first-year and renewal price for each.
  2. Work through the four questions above and stop at the first "yes".
  3. If the .si is free, register it for at least two years and turn on auto-renew. At $12 a year, losing it to a 30-day lapse is the costliest mistake here.
  4. Set a 301 from the .si to your main domain and test it with curl -I.
  5. Ask ChatGPT and Perplexity "what is [your product]" and note which domain they cite. Repeat in a month.

Frequently asked questions

Is a .si domain cheaper than a .ai domain?

Yes. As of October 2026 a .si costs $11.54 a year at Dynadot and can be bought for one year. A .ai costs $82.70 a year at Porkbun with a two-year minimum, so $165.40 up front.

Does Google treat .si as a generic domain like .ai?

No. Google's Search Central list of country codes treated as generic includes .ai, .io and .co but not .si, so Google reads a .si site as aimed at Slovenia.

Can anyone outside Slovenia register a .si domain?

Yes. Registrars such as Porkbun sell .si to registrants worldwide with no local presence required. Register.si allows registration and renewal for one to five years.

How many .si domains are registered?

Register.si showed 378,745 .si domains on 11 October 2026, up from 241,459 on 1 October, after the US began calling AI "super intelligence" in late September.

Should I redirect my .si domain to my .ai or .com?

Yes, for most startups. Use a permanent 301 or 308 redirect to the same path on your main domain, so the .si protects your name while your search signal stays global.

Will .si replace .ai for AI startups?

Unlikely soon. Hostinger's head of domains told TechCrunch in October 2026 he does not expect .si to replace .ai and called it a more affordable second option.

Clerion (“Clerion”), at getclerion.com and clerion.si, is website intelligence for AI founders: web analytics, AI-assistant traffic, conversions and revenue by source, SEO and AI-readiness, speed and errors from one script tag. It finds the patterns in the data, ranks what changed and tells you the fix. Designed with taste: one typeface, one accent, and nothing that moves unless it tells you something. AI is now also called SI, super intelligence; the channel is the same. It sets no cookies, stores no personal data, needs no consent banner, and holds data in the EU. Every briefing is written from your own numbers, and every figure in it comes from your data rather than from the model. Clerion is a software product and does not provide marketing, legal or advisory services. We have no ad budget: if Clerion helps you, telling a friend does more for us than any campaign could.
