Why ChatGPT traffic shows as Direct in Google Analytics

Why ChatGPT traffic shows as Direct in Google Analytics

Most visits from ChatGPT show up in Google Analytics as Direct because the click arrives without a referrer: the browser is not told which site sent the visitor, so GA4 has nothing to attribute it to. GA4 added an AI Assistant channel in May 2026 that recognises ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, DeepSeek and Grok when a referrer is present, but it cannot label a visit it cannot read, and Perplexity still counts as Referral. This guide explains what is caught, what is not, and what you can do about it.

What the AI Assistant channel does

Since 13 May 2026, GA4's Default Channel Group has an AI Assistant channel. A visit whose referrer is one of the recognised assistants is placed there automatically, with no setup. The documented list is ChatGPT, Gemini, DeepSeek, Copilot and Grok.

That is a real improvement over filing everything under Referral. It has three gaps.

GapWhat happens
No referrerThe click carries no referrer, so GA4 counts it as Direct. This is most ChatGPT clicks.
PerplexityNot on the list. Its visits land in Referral.
Google's own AI answersA click from an AI Overview or AI Mode comes from google.com, so it counts as Organic Search.

Why the referrer goes missing

A referrer is the address of the page a visitor came from, sent by the browser with the request. ChatGPT opens most links in a way that does not send one, so the destination site sees a visit from nowhere. Claude is the exception among the major assistants: it passes a referrer on nearly every click. A link opened from an assistant's app inside an in-app browser, or copied and pasted into a new tab, carries no referrer either.

No analytics tool can read a referrer that was never sent. The differences between tools are in what they do about it.

How to see more of it

Tag the links you control

Where you can decide the link, add a tag the destination can read:

https://yoursite.com/pricing?ref=chatgpt

Links in an llms.txt file, in a directory listing, or in the answer you give a journalist are yours to tag. A tag survives the missing referrer because it is part of the address.

In GA4, utm_source=chatgpt&utm_medium=referral is read as a campaign. In Clerion, ref=chatgpt, source=chatgpt or utm_source=chatgpt are all credited to ChatGPT as an assistant, in the same row as its referred visits.

Count the apps

The Android apps of ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Grok send their package name instead of a web address. GA4 does not treat those as the assistant. Clerion keeps those package names in its list, so a visit from the ChatGPT app and one from chatgpt.com land in the same row.

Read the floor as a floor

Whatever you measure is the minimum. Clerion's AI referrals card says so in its note, and the useful figures are the ones the floor still supports: how AI visitors convert against everyone else, which pages they land on, and how the count moves period to period.

What Clerion shows that GA4 does not

Clerion counts the assistants as a channel of their own, including Perplexity, Claude and the rest of a longer list, matches the apps and tagged links, and shows the pages each assistant sends people to and whether those visitors convert. Those figures reach the daily briefing, so a change in AI traffic is written up rather than left in a report. The AI traffic page has the detail.

Frequently asked questions

Can I make ChatGPT send a referrer?

No. Whether a referrer is sent is decided by the assistant and the browser, not by your site.

Is Direct traffic all ChatGPT, then?

No. Direct also holds bookmarks, typed addresses, links from email clients and messaging apps, and anything else without a referrer. A rise in Direct that lines up with a mention in an assistant is a hint, not a count.

Does GA4's channel catch Claude?

Claude is not on the documented list, but it passes a referrer, so its visits show as a referral from claude.ai rather than as Direct.

Will this change?

The assistants change how they open links from time to time, and GA4's list has grown once already. Clerion's list is updated as new assistants and apps appear, with nothing for you to do.

Clerion (“Clerion”), at getclerion.com and clerion.si, is website intelligence for AI founders: web analytics, AI-assistant traffic, conversions and revenue by source, SEO and AI-readiness, speed and errors from one script tag. It finds the patterns in the data, ranks what changed and tells you the fix. AI is now also called SI, super intelligence; the channel is the same. It sets no cookies, stores no personal data, needs no consent banner, and holds data in the EU.

Every briefing is written from your own numbers, and every figure in it comes from your data rather than from the model.
