How to track Perplexity traffic to your website (2026)
Filter your analytics by source for perplexity.ai, since Perplexity passes its domain as the referrer on most clicks. In GA4 those visits usually sit under Referral, not the AI Assistant channel, so add a custom channel group above Referral to track them as AI traffic.

To track Perplexity traffic, filter your analytics by source and look for perplexity.ai, because Perplexity passes its domain as the referrer on most clicks. In GA4 those visits usually sit under Referral rather than the AI Assistant channel, so a custom channel group placed above Referral is what turns them into a number you can watch.

How does a Perplexity visit reach your analytics?
Perplexity answers with numbered sources. When someone clicks one of those sources, their browser opens your page and usually sends https://www.perplexity.ai/ as the referrer. Your analytics script reads that referrer and records the visit as coming from perplexity.ai.
Unlike ChatGPT, Perplexity is not documented to add a UTM tag to its links. Tracking depends on the referrer alone. That is less fragile than it sounds: in SearchPilot's mid-2026 reference table, Perplexity is the AI platform that passes referrer data most consistently, on desktop web, mobile web and its Comet browser.
There is one gap. SearchPilot reports that around 30 percent of visits from the Perplexity mobile apps arrive with no referrer, and Ahrefs found that the Perplexity desktop app did not send a referrer on any link it tested. Those visits land in Direct.
Where does Perplexity traffic show up in GA4?
Usually as perplexity.ai / referral, in the Referral channel. Google's help page describes the AI Assistant default channel as covering sources like ChatGPT, Gemini, DeepSeek, Copilot and Grok. Perplexity is not named, and the default channel group cannot be edited. So if you only look at the AI Assistant row, you can miss Perplexity entirely while it sits one row down under Referral.
Here is where to look in the tools most small teams use.
| Tool | Where to look | What to search for |
|---|---|---|
| GA4 | Reports, Acquisition, Traffic acquisition, dimension Session source / medium | perplexity |
| GA4 (channel view) | Same report, Session default channel group | Referral, then expand by source |
| Plausible, Fathom, Umami and similar | Sources or Referrers panel | perplexity.ai |
| Server logs | Referer field | perplexity.ai |
How do I track Perplexity traffic in GA4 step by step?
- Check what is already there. Open Reports, Acquisition, Traffic acquisition. Switch the first column to Session source / medium, set the date range to the last 90 days and search for
perplexity. Small sites often see a handful of visits a month, so a short range can show zero. - Create a custom channel group. In Admin, under Data display, open Channel groups and create a new group. Google's own help page on custom channel groups uses AI assistants as its worked example.
- Add an AI channel. Name it something like AI assistants. Add a condition so it catches both what GA4 already detects and what it misses: session medium exactly matches
ai-assistant, or session source matches a regex such asperplexity\.ai|claude\.ai|chatgpt\.com|gemini\.google\.com|copilot\.microsoft\.com. - Move it above Referral. Channel rules run top to bottom and the first match wins. If Referral sits above your AI channel, Referral keeps the Perplexity visits.
- Save and report on it. Select the new channel group as the dimension in Traffic acquisition. Add your signup or purchase key events as columns so you see what those visitors did, not only that they came.
Do not add utm_source=perplexity to your own links. Perplexity links to whatever URL it chose to cite, and the referrer already tells you where the visit came from.
Is PerplexityBot in my logs the same as Perplexity traffic?
No. Perplexity's crawler documentation lists two user agents. PerplexityBot reads pages so they can be surfaced and linked in Perplexity's search results. Perplexity-User fetches a page when a person asks a question and Perplexity wants to check a source for the answer. Both are machines. They show up in server logs, not as visitors in a script-based analytics tool.
The two are related, though. If PerplexityBot cannot reach your pages, or your firewall blocks it, you are less likely to be cited, and fewer people will click through. Perplexity's docs recommend allowing PerplexityBot in robots.txt if you want to appear in its results. Our guide on how to make your website readable by AI crawlers covers the robots.txt side.
Why is some Perplexity traffic still in Direct?
Because some clicks carry no referrer, and nothing on your side can add it back. The causes reported in public tests are the Perplexity desktop app and part of the mobile app traffic. When a visit arrives with no referrer and no tag, every analytics tool, GA4 included, files it as Direct.
You can still notice the pattern. People rarely type the full URL of a deep article by hand. If Direct visits to a page rise at the same time as perplexity.ai referrals to that page, some of that Direct is probably Perplexity too. Treat it as a hint, not a count. The same problem affects ChatGPT, which we covered in is ChatGPT sending me traffic. Our guide on why ChatGPT traffic shows as Direct in Google Analytics explains the GA4 side.
What should I do once I can see Perplexity visits?
Look at three things.
- Which pages it sends people to. Those are the pages Perplexity cites. Each one needs a clear next step, because a visitor who lands on an article with no path to your product leaves.
- What those visitors do next. Signups and payments matter more than visit counts. Keep the source attached until a payment happens, as described in how to track revenue from ChatGPT traffic. The same method works for Perplexity.
- How it compares with the other assistants. One AI channel that holds ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini and Copilot, split by source, tells you which assistant is worth your attention this month.

What is Clerion?
Clerion is website intelligence for AI founders. You add it with one script tag. It sets no cookies, needs no consent banner, and keeps data in the EU. It counts ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini and Copilot visits as their own channel, shows revenue by source, and sends a daily briefing that says the one thing worth doing, with your own numbers as the evidence. It also works as a Claude connector, so you can ask about your traffic in Claude.
How do I install Clerion?
Setup is a domain and one script tag.
- Sign up at getclerion.com with your email.
- Add your domain.
- Paste the script tag into the head of your site. The quickstart shows where it goes.
From the first visit, Perplexity sits in the AI-assistant channel next to the other assistants, with no channel group to build or keep up to date.

Frequently asked questions
How do I see Perplexity traffic in GA4?
Open Reports, Acquisition, Traffic acquisition, switch the dimension to Session source / medium and search for perplexity. Most Perplexity visits appear as perplexity.ai / referral. Use a 90-day range, because small sites see low volumes.
Why is Perplexity not in the GA4 AI Assistant channel?
Google's AI Assistant channel names ChatGPT, Gemini, DeepSeek, Copilot and Grok, and Perplexity is not on that list. Its visits are still counted, usually under Referral. A custom channel group with perplexity.ai in its rule, placed above Referral, groups them as AI traffic.
Does Perplexity add UTM parameters to its links?
It is not documented to. Unlike ChatGPT, which adds utm_source=chatgpt.com, Perplexity tracking relies on the referrer, which it passes on most web clicks. Do not add utm_source=perplexity to your own URLs.
Why does some Perplexity traffic show as Direct?
Some clicks carry no referrer. Ahrefs found the Perplexity desktop app sent no referrer in its tests, and SearchPilot reports about 30 percent of Perplexity mobile app visits arrive without one. Those visits land in Direct and cannot be recovered.
Is PerplexityBot the same as Perplexity traffic?
No. PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User are automated fetchers listed in Perplexity's crawler docs. They appear in server logs, not as visitors in a script-based analytics tool. Perplexity traffic means people clicking source links in Perplexity answers.
