How to add Clerion to your site: paste this one line

Clerion Research Team3 November 20267 min read

Paste the Clerion script tag inside the head of every page you want counted, then visit your site once to confirm the first visit arrives. No cookie banner and no event plan: sources, AI-assistant referrals, speed and errors are counted from that one line.

Paste This One Line banner on a blue wash

To add Clerion to your site, paste one script tag inside the <head> of every page you want counted, then load your site once to confirm the first visit arrives. There is no cookie banner to add and no event plan to write: pageviews, sources, AI-assistant referrals, speed and errors are counted from that one line.

What is the one line?

It is a single <script> element. This is the version from the Clerion quickstart, written on one line, with placeholders where your own values go:

<script src="https://api.getclerion.com/sdk/clerion-analytics.js" data-api-key="YOUR_API_KEY" data-website-id="YOUR_WEBSITE_ID"></script>

Do not copy the placeholders. The copy inside Clerion already carries your real key and site id, so take it from the install screen after you add your site. The script tag reference explains the two values:

Attribute What it is Required
data-api-key Your tracking key, starting cle_ Yes. Without it the snippet does nothing.
data-website-id Your site id, starting site_ It tells Clerion which site the visits belong to.

The tag loads deferred, so it does not hold up the page, and it sets no cookies.

Where exactly do I paste it?

Inside <head>, once per page. The <head> element is where a page keeps the things a visitor does not see, such as its title, its styles and its scripts, as MDN's reference describes. Most site builders give you one box that adds code to the head of every page, so one paste covers the whole site.

You may not need to look this up. When you add your site, Clerion recognises WordPress, Shopify, Webflow, Squarespace, Wix and Next.js from the page itself and shows the steps for yours next to the snippet. Here is where the line goes on the common platforms, from the install docs:

Platform Where the line goes
Plain HTML Anywhere inside <head> on every page
WordPress The free WPCode plugin: Code Snippets, Header & Footer, Header. Or header.php before </head>, in a child theme
Webflow Site settings, Custom code, Head code, then publish
Shopify Online Store, Themes, Edit code, layout/theme.liquid, before </head>
Squarespace Settings, Code Injection, Header
Wix Settings, Custom Code, Add Custom Code, All pages, Head. Needs a premium plan on your own domain
Next.js app/layout (or pages/_document), or next/script with the afterInteractive strategy

Framer, Ghost, Astro, Hugo, Laravel, Rails, Django and hand-written HTML work the same way. If you can add one line to the head, you can run Clerion.

What if someone else edits my site?

Send them the snippet from the install screen. They get the line and the steps for your platform, and their reply comes to you. If you set up from your phone, add your site and email the snippet to yourself to paste from a laptop.

How do I know it worked?

Visit your own site in another tab. The install screen updates on its own, and Clerion emails you when the first visit lands. The live pulse on the Overview updates every 30 seconds, so your visit should show almost at once.

If you pasted it and nothing has arrived, the install screen has a "Pasted it? Check my site" button. It fetches your live page and tells you whether the snippet is there, missing, or carrying an old key. The check your installation page lists the usual causes:

  • The page you loaded does not have the tag. A page without it is not counted. Check the page source.
  • It was added through a tag manager. Ad blockers block tag managers, and the tag never runs.
  • Your browser sends Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track. Clerion does not count those visits, so test from a normal browser.
  • You opted your own device out. If you once ran localStorage.setItem('clerion_ignore', 'true'), that browser is left out on purpose.

To watch events as they are sent, add data-debug="true" to the tag and open the browser console. Take it off again when you are done.

Can I load it through Google Tag Manager?

You can, but the Clerion docs ask you not to. Ad blockers block the tag manager itself on many devices, so loading Clerion through it gives back the accuracy you installed it for. Paste the line directly instead.

What should I avoid?

  • Two copies on one page. A tag in your theme and another from a plugin count every visit twice. Keep one per page.
  • Pasting it in the body of one page only. Pages without the tag are invisible to Clerion.
  • A strict Content Security Policy that blocks it. If your site sets one, allow the Clerion script source and its collection endpoint in script-src and connect-src. The exact hosts are shown with your snippet in the dashboard.

What does Clerion count once the line is in?

Everything below works without configuration, according to the quickstart:

  • Pageviews, visitors, entry and exit pages, referrers and campaigns.
  • Referrals from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini and Copilot as their own channel.
  • Clicks, scroll depth, forms and outbound links.
  • Load time and Core Web Vitals, plus JavaScript errors grouped by page.
  • Bots, which are detected and left out of your numbers.

Signups and purchases need one call each, window.clerion.trackEvent("signup"), which the custom events docs cover. That is what lets you see which source sends people who pay, as in how to track revenue from ChatGPT traffic.

If you want to know what to watch once data arrives, our guide on analytics for an AI startup is a short list. For the AI side, see is ChatGPT sending me traffic and how to track Perplexity traffic.

What is Clerion?

Clerion is website intelligence for AI founders. You add it with one script tag. It sets no cookies, needs no consent banner, keeps data in the EU, and never sells it. It counts AI-assistant visits as their own channel, shows revenue by source, and each morning says the one thing worth doing, with your own numbers as the evidence. The model only sees aggregates.

What happens after the first visit?

Clerion works from your first visitor and gets sharper once it has about a week of data. If you import your Google Analytics 4 history, it can write a briefing straight away. Either way, the next step is the same: paste the line today, so the week starts now.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I paste the Clerion script tag?

Inside the head of every page you want counted, once per page. Most site builders have one head code box that applies site-wide, such as Webflow's Head code or Squarespace's Code Injection, so one paste covers the whole site.

Does the Clerion script slow down my site?

The tag loads deferred, so it does not hold up the page while it renders. It also sets no cookies.

How do I check that Clerion is installed?

Visit your own site in another tab. The install screen updates on its own and Clerion emails you when the first visit lands. If nothing arrives, the Pasted it? Check my site button fetches your live page and says whether the snippet is there, missing, or carrying an old key.

Can I install Clerion with Google Tag Manager?

You can, but the Clerion docs advise against it. Ad blockers block tag managers on many devices, so the tag never runs for those visitors. Pasting the line directly into the head is more accurate.

Do I need a cookie banner for Clerion?

No. Clerion counts visits without setting cookies, so there is no consent banner to add. An optional consent banner exists if you want to follow visitors across visits.

What if someone else edits my website?

Send them the snippet from the Clerion install screen. They get the line and the steps for your platform, and their reply comes to you.

Clerion (“Clerion”), at getclerion.com and clerion.si, is website intelligence for AI founders: web analytics, AI-assistant traffic, conversions and revenue by source, SEO and AI-readiness, speed and errors from one script tag. It finds the patterns in the data, ranks what changed and tells you the fix. Designed with taste: one typeface, no accent colour, and nothing that moves unless it tells you something. AI is now also called SI, super intelligence; the channel is the same. It sets no cookies, stores no personal data, needs no consent banner, and holds data in the EU. Every briefing is written from your own numbers, and every figure in it comes from your data rather than from the model. Clerion is a software product and does not provide marketing, legal or advisory services. We have no ad budget: if Clerion helps you, telling a friend does more for us than any campaign could.
